The Mission of the Stairs Carskaddon Essay Scholarship is to encourage and reward an understanding of American History as it relates to the life of the writer.

The Stairs Carskaddon Essay Scholarship was established in 2005 by Stanley Stairs in honor of his mother, Helen Louise McAlpine Carskaddon. With her love of history and experience as a teacher, Helen believed that a good, solid, basic education was essential to improving one's lot in life and becoming a good citizen. In the 21st century, Helen felt that meant getting a college degree. She thought that her scholarship might make a difference in the lives of at least a few young people in San Luis Obispo County. Helen served as the regent of the La Cuesta Chapter, NSDAR from 1986 to 1988. The scholarship has been awarded annually to a graduating San Luis Obispo County senior who best answers the question, "How their own personal American History affected their contemporary life in San Luis Obispo County." Since 2005, $23,000 in scholarships have been awarded. For additional information about the Stairs Carskaddon Essay Scholarship, please visit the Scholarship web site at this link

Helen Louise McAlpine Carskaddon was born in 1908 and died in 2005.  The photo was taken one month prior to her death at age 96.  She was a lovely, intelligent lady, very much admired by our chapter ladies.
